Character history since Laura joined the show:
Learning that Reese was really Carly Roberts pushed Carly over the edge. She had a complete breakdown and ended up being institutionalized. Reese would later die of injuries sustained in a train crash and Carly would make a complete recovery.
Carly's life would taken an unexpected turn when tragically her best friend, Courtney, died shortly after giving birth to a baby boy. Determined to be the mother for Courtney's son, who was named John, Carly put aside her dislike of Jax and vowed to help him with the baby in any way that she could. Slowly Carly began falling in-love with Jax. When he confessed to her that he wasn't really John's father, as everyone believed, Carly stood by his side. She helped Jax keep the truth about the baby from his real father, Nikolas Cassadine. She even went so far as to switch the results of a paternity test to preserve the secret. Those efforts turned out to be wasted. Robin Scorpio had learned the truth about John's paternity and at his christening, revealed the truth to Nikolas. Nikolas immediately claimed his son and a short while later re-named him Spencer to honor his mother and siblings.
Jax and Carly were devastated over loosing John. For a while they feared that it was all that had kept them together but they would soon realize that even without John they loved each other deeply. They would make several attempts at marriage but at the last minute something would happen to prevent it. One of those times it was Jerry Jacks calling his brother for help. Jax took off immediately. Carly had a difficult time with the ease at which Jax was able to leave. It was the second time he had done so and it crushed her.
While Jax was gone, Carly married Sonny to keep from being forced to testify against him. Carly had walked in just as Lorenzo was preparing to shoot Sonny in cold blood. The interruption allowed Sonny to defend himself and Lorenzo ended up gravely wounded. Things were further complicated when a short time later, Sonny and Carly ended up as hostages in the Metro-Court crisis that introduced us to James Craig. James Craig would turn out to be Jerry Jax who had arranged for Jax to chase a false trail so that he wouldn't be in danger of the international arms deal that was taking place in Port Charles, a deal that Lorenzo was acting as the middleman to. With Lorenzo in the hospital, James/Jerry stormed the Metro-Court and took hostages when the alarm was activated and the vault locked.
Carly and Sonny grew close during the hostage crisis and afterwards ended up making love. Carly realized immediately that it had been a huge mistake and called it quits with Sonny for good. She told Jax the truth when he came home. Initially he was deeply hurt but eventually he realized that he was partly to blame because he had abandoned Carly for the second time. Jax and Carly reconnected and decided to stop putting off their wedding. As soon as Carly's divorce to Sonny was final, Carly and Jax got married in a lavish but quickly arranged wedding.
Their marriage would not be without bumps. Jerry would once again draw his brother out of town so that he could take care of his business without worry about Jax. It put a tremendous strain on Jax's marriage to Carly. That came to a screeching halt after Jerry's ex-lover kidnapped Jax and forced him to have sex with her. Jax and Carly vowed then that Jerry would never come between them again. These days Jax barely speaks to Jerry. Carly and Jax talk of having children but Carly is reluctant. She's afraid that it may be difficult and isn't certain she could deal with the disappointment should she have difficulty conceiving.
Carly found out from Sam that Elizabeth's son Jake was actually Jason Morgan's baby. She was upset with Jason for not confiding in her and telling her the truth. She tried to get Jason to claim Jake as his own but Jason told her to mind her business and that he and Elizabeth came to an agreement to tell everyone that Elizabeth's ex-husband Lucky, was the father. Carly finally talked to Jax about wanting to have a baby again, and they tried to conceive a child. On February 5, Carly told Jax that she was pregnant. In March, Carly miscarried her and Jax's baby due to an explosion at a warehouse where she and her eldest son Michael were inside. After nearly dying, Carly recovered, but was deeply affected by the miscarriage. Not long after Carly recovered from her near death experience, her son Michael was shot in the head and is now in a permanent coma.
Carly had a difficult time dealing with her grief after losing Michael. Jax did his best to comfort his wife, but it was to no avail and the two slowly started drifting apart. Carly slept with Sonny after taking Michael to his new home at the Aftercare institute. Carly slowly began to move on from losing Michael, but indirectly started causing more problems in her own marriage by going toe to toe with Kate, Jax's business partner at Crimson. Jax got fed up and asked for a separation. Carly did her best to win him back and just when she did, he found out about her one night stand with Sonny and broke up with her. The two are currently filing for divorce. In the midst of all of this Nikolas is interested in purchasing shares of the Metro Court. Jax strongly opposes, but Carly is ready to sell half of her shares, just to spite him. Summary courtesy of soapcentral.com
